Frequency
the number of complete vibrations or cycles per second in a vibrating system the primary determinant of a listener’s perception of pitch
Pitch
the relative position of a musical sound. Faster vibration=higher pitch
Tone
sound with definite consistent pitch
Harmonic
a series of frequencies, all of which are integral multiples of a single frequency called the fundemental
Overtone
also called partial, a secondary vibration in a sound producing body which contributes to the overall tone color
What contributes to the overall tone color of a sound
overtone
How is sound heard
object is agitated, waves travel from that area through air, to ear canal, to ear drum
True or False: The speed determines how we hear different sounds
False: speed doesn’t change, its the number of waves that change
What is the range of frequency humans can hear
20,000
Sound envelope
the characteristics defining the attack, steady state, and decay of a tone
Timbre
the characteristics or quality of sound as determined by its harmonics and sound envelope
What is the second, third, forth etc vibration in harmonics called
overtones

Vibrations are produced by striking either one portion of instruments against another, or an object on instrument
