mutation Flashcards
(10 cards)
mutation def
change in the base sequence (order of A,T,C, and Gs) in a molecule of DNA
What are the types of mutations?
point and frameshift
what are the three types of point mutation and what do they change
silent/synonymous- there is a change in a base, but the amino acid isn’t changed
missense- changes what amino acid is being produced
nonsense- causes a stop sequence
what are the two types of frameshift mutation
insertion and deletion
if a base is changed and results in a stop codon, what is that?
point; nonsense
if a base is changed but nothing changes what is that?
point; silent/synonymous
if two bases are “deleted” what is that?
frameshift; deletion, missense
If three bases are added what is that?
frameshift; insertion, missense
True or False:
mutations can be caused by mistakes in DNA replication, mutagens, and viral infections
true
True or False:
frameshift mutation causes the most change later on
false; it causes most change early on
