Mutation Flashcards
What is mutation?
The genes contain information that cells use for growth, development and to function properly. This information is carried in a form of chemical. Some codes are faulty, We are all born with faulty gene copies and to most of us these are harmless. Since a nucleus contains over 20,000 genes, these mistakes are bound to happen. Mutation is a small change in the sequence of DNA.
Does it matter where the mutations happen?
If the mutation happens in The body cell, It is most likely it won’t be passed onto the offsprings. Whereas if the mutations happen in the sex cells there’s a chance it will be passed onto the offspring.
What can cause mutation?
Damage to the DNA strand UV rays Xray rays Nicotine HPV virus
What is silent mutation?
Silent mutation is when there is a change in the DNA strand but it does not affect the information or the protein that DNA strand is supposed to make.
