mutations Flashcards
(15 cards)
when do mutations occur?
Process of making copies of DNA
two types of gene mutations
Point mutation and frameshift mutation
What is point mutation
tiny change in a gene and happens when one ketter is swapped, added, or deleted
what is frame shift mutations?
Shifts in reading frame, so the genetic code will not make sense. Insertion and deletion.
Somatic mutation
change in the DNA that happens after you’re born, in body cells. cant be passed on to your children
germ line mutation
DNA change that happens in the egg or sperm cell and can be inherited
positive mutation
Some mutations provide an advantage which improves of survival for organisms
Neutral mutation
Does not affect chances of survival
Negative mutations
Hurt a chance of survival
What does genetic diversity called?
Means there are many different types of males in the population of an organism
What is the natural selection?
means that animals or plants that are better at surviving in their environment have more babies, and their babies often have the same helpful traits
cells involved in sexual reproduction
Sperm and egg cells
most mutations that occurred cause
Natural affect
how many chromosomes are found in a human section?
23
