Describe what happens during a lunar eclipse
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are alined
What phase of the moon does a lunar eclipse during
full moon
What shadow causes a lunar eclipse
The Earths shadow
Describe what happens during a solar eclipse
When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the sun, or solar eclipse
What phase of the moon does a solar eclipse during
New Moon
What shadow causes a solar eclipse
The moons shadow
Umbra
the dark central part of a sunspot
Penumbra
the less dark outer part of a sunspot
What shape are the orbits of planets
An elliptical
What is the most common theory of how the solar system formed
Big Bang theory
Revolution
the orbiting of an object around another object
What type of galaxy if our galaxy
Spiral
Gravitation pull of galaxies
Everything that has mass or energy has gravitational pull
Order of the planets
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
waning.
Waning is the opposite, or decreasing after a full moon, and is always illuminated on the left
Waxing
The same but on the right
Moons rotation
also takes approximately 29.5 days for the moon to rotate once on its axis
Moon revolution
one revolution relative to the Sun in about 29.5 days
Why do we see the same surface of the moon
Only one side of the Moon is visible from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that the Moon orbits the Earth
Direct and indirect sunlight and seasons
Because the Earth is curved, not all rays hit it directly. Light rays that hit the earth at an angle are known as indirect rays
Length of rotation
Earth rotates once in about 24 hours with respect to the Sun
Length of revolution
365.26 days
Cause of seasons
The earths tilt
Tilt of the earths axis
23.5 degrees
