Mycobacteria TB

A
  • starts in lungs, form lesions, spreads to O2 rich areas like kidney, long bones, lymph on macrophages
  • spread by coughing up sputum
  • immunocompromised people more at risk - cant rid infection
  • immunocompetent people can get rid infected macrophages but latent infection remains in granulomas
  • may become active again and appear as scrofula in neck or in GI, long bones, CNS
  • kids may get TB meningitis
  • very resistant; treat with 4 drugs
  • mycolic acid in cell wall

Mycobacteria Leprae

A
  • only 5% people susceptible
  • spread by nasal secretions and skin lesions
  • cant grow in vitro. prefer 30C
  • replicates in histocytes, schwaan cells, epithelial
  • cause nerve damage
  • wide range of symptoms. some have large immune response (+PPD) and others poor immune response (-PPD)

acid fast stain procedure

A
  1. carbofushion (bright pink)
  2. boil
  3. cool
  4. decolorize - with acid/alc
  5. counterstain and rinse
