Myology ( muscles ) Flashcards
(23 cards)
Study of muscles.
myology
4 main characteristics of muscles.
Excitability, contractibility, extensibility, elasticity
ability of muscle to respond to stimulus.
excitability
Ability of muscle to contract.
contractibility
ability to stretch or extend.
extensibility
ability of muscle to return to its original shape.
elasticity
3 Functions of muscle.
Motion, support, heat production
Where the muscle attaches to bone or muscle.
origin
connects muscle to bone.
tendon
connects bone to bone.
ligaments
main meaty part.
belly
where the muscle attaches to either skin, bone or other muscle.
insertion
2 types of contractions.
isotonic, isometric
during contraction muscle shorten and lengthens.
isotonic
during contraction the muscle does not shorten or lengthen.
isometric
types of muscle
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
stated, located in all muscle attached to the skeleton. ( voluntary )
Skeletal
no striation, located within internal organs. ( involuntary )
Smooth
Striated, located in the heart. ( involuntary )
cardiac
Muscle fibers
slow twitch, fast twitch
- Efficient at using oxygen for continuous activity.
- slow firing
- slow fatigue rate
- marathon runner
slow twitch
- Efficient for short bursts of strength or speed.
- fast firing
- fast fatigue rate
- sprinter
fast twitch
characteristics of naming muscles.
