What are the elements of plot?
Intro, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution
Introduction
aka exposition. Beginning which introduces the reader to characters, setting, and elements of theme, point of view and the ordinary world is established
Inciting Event
initial event that introduces the reader to the central conflict.
Rising Action
events that lead up to main conflict; main characters embark on a course of action incl. setbacks and/or advances. minor conflicts occur to increase tension
Climax
turning point of central conflict
Falling Action
following events that happen in between the climax and the end where the conflict gradually resolves
Resolution
conclusion; character is changed from before the actions began
What are the types of inter/intrapersonal conflicts?
Person vs society, vs self, vs nature, vs. person, vs fate, vs self
Note: Several types of conflicts may be present but one predominant one stays throughout
Person vs society
faces difficulty and judgement, in conflict w/values of society, difficult concept
Person vs person
pits the protagonist against someone else
Person vs nature
protagonist is threatened by an element of nature; can also be born w/ a predisposition ex. disorder
Person vs fate
protagonist must contend against a fate of life or death over which they have little control. May be a form of person vs nature
Conflict
struggle between the protagonist and an opposing force
atmosphere
mood or feeling the author is intending to create. can be developed w/ setting, characterization, rhetorical devices
setting
environment + surroundings where the events take place
Person vs self
(Inter) deals w/difficulty concerning with him/herself, pulled by 2 courses of action or differing emotions. characteristic of fine literature
Direct vs indirect characterization
Direct is what is directly stated in the text; describes the character exactly how the author portrays it
Indirect characterizes a character by how he acts, says, and infers what the author is portraying (STEAL)
tone
attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. conveyed through the choice of words (ex. informal vs. formal, aggressive, happy, etc)
What is a myth
stories about beginnings told and retold over generations, started w/religious purpose and attempted to explain mysteries
Joseph Campbell
the mythologist who coined the term “hero’s journey”
characterization
the process by which an author reveals a character’s personality
Stages of the Hero’s Journey
ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting w/mentor, crossing the threshold, tests allies and enemies, approach, ordeal, the reward, the road back, the resurrection, return w/elixir.
Ordinary world
The hero is introduced sympathetically so audience can identify w/situation, background of environment, heredity, history is established.
Call to Adventure
shaking it up, either from external pressures or from something rising up. the inciting event.
