G: I went to a new shopping mall without intending to buy anything, but I ended up buying a lot of things.
I went to the newly built shopping mall without any intention of buying anything, but I ended up purchasing various things.
新鮮な魚を選んだつもりで買ったのに、
パックから出したら
ものすごいにおいがした。
G: I thought I had chosen fresh fish, but when I took it out of the package it smelled awful.
I chose this {believing} that it would be fresh fish, but when I took it out of the package, it smelled incredibly bad.
冗談のつもりで言っただけなのに、相手を傷付けてしまった。
G: I was just saying it as a joke, but it ended up hurting the other person.
Despite saying it with the intention of making a joke, I ended up hurting their feelings.
パーティーでダンサーになったつもりで、みんなの前で踊った。
At a party, I danced in front of everybody,
[as if I was] a dancer.
ご馳走するつもりで行ったのに、
おごってもらうことになった。
Despite going [with the intention of ] treating everyone, they treated me.
ご馳走する: ごちそうする: to treat
ご馳走するよ: I’ll treat you
お土産のつもりで買ったが、食べてしまった。
G: I bought it as a souvenir, but ended up eating it.
B: I bought it with the intention of giving it as a gift, but I ended up eating it.
祭日にやるつもりで宿題を残しておいたのですが、
全然できませんでした。
I set aside my homework with the intention of doing it over the holiday,
but I didn’t do any of it.
祭日: だいじつ: holiday
どうせ「ウドの大木だ」と悪口を言われるのオチだ。
I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT it will just end up with me being called ‘big and useless.’
