NAAN Flashcards
(12 cards)
Biological Normal
-all behaviour and eustress occurs due to internal biological processes happening in the body
-e.g activation of specific parts of the brain, nervous system, target organs and release of specific neurotransmitters and hormones
-Cause is nature rather than nurture
Biological Abnormal
-abnormal levels of stress (distress) viewed as a result of specific activations of these biological systems
-e.g activation of sympathetic ANS, activation of brain areas (hypothalamus and pituitary) target organs such as the adrenal medulla. The release of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol
Biological Aim
To modify stress the bio approach aims to modify these particular biological systems to bring them back into balance
-reduce activity in the ANS, hypothalamus and pituitary.
-Prevent adrenal medulla from releasing adrenaline and the adrenal cortex from releasing cortisol.
Biological Return to Normal
Done by using drugs beta blockers
-have an antagonistic impact on the sympathetic ANS which will reduce its activity causing lower heart rate and blood pressure.
-reduce negative impact of stress on the body and prevent associated health problems resulting from continued activation of these bio systems in stress e.g hypertension and immunosuppression.
