Matrix
Sometimes known as the root, the matrix is where cells diverse called mitosis. It is the growing area of the nail plate. It is found under the eponichium at the base of the nail plate
Nail Plate
The nail plate is made of hard keratinised epidermal cells. The nail cells are packed very close together with some fat and moisture and this forms the main body. The water content affects the brittleness of the nail plate
Free Edge
The nail plate grows forward over the nail bed until it extends beyond the fingertip and is known as the free edge. It forms an attachment to the nail bed by its longitude and furrows. It appears white
Nail Bed
Had grooves and furrows which provide a good interlocking grooves with the nail plate. There is blood supply to the nail bed
Lanula
Found at the base of the nail, covering the matrix. Often known as the half moon
Cuticle
Overlapping stratum corneum around the base of the nail developed from the epidermis
Nail Groove
These run along side the edge of the nail plate to allow the nail plate to move forward
Nail Wall
Folds of skin overlapping the sides of the nails
Perionychium
Cuticle at the sides of the nail
Eponychium
Extension of the cuticle at the base of the nail plate
Hyphonychium
Part of the epidermis under the free edge
