A

Douglass was sent there when he was 16 to try and break him since Covey had the reputation. During his first week Covey whipped him and cut his back. Douglass remained there for a year and a half where the whippings took place weekly. During this time he worked long hours, was underfed and his spirit was broken. One day he was in the stables and Covey came to tie him up to whip him and Douglass fought back.
