Deconstruction
“Discovering, acknowledging and ‘taking apart’ the beliefs, ideas and practices of the broader culture in which a person lives that are serving to assist the problem and the problem story”
Discourse
A system of statements, practices, and institutional structures that share common values.
Externalize
The process of developing a dialogue with a client about a problem as if the problem was external from the client (i.e. Bon’Kwee’Kwee/unhealed Amy).
Postmodernism
The view that there is no one objective “truth” and that there are many multiple possible interpretations of any event.
Reauthoring
The process in narrative therapy wherein the client and the therapist begin rewriting the client’s story into an alternative story.
Social Constructionist
A theoretical standpoint that takes the view that there is no objective reality. Our reality is constructed within social groups in the context of shared language, culture, history, and relationships.
Unique Outcomes
Events that a person partakes in that shine or stand out in contrast to times when the person subjected himself or herself or others to the dominant, problem-focused story.
