Nasal sinuses Flashcards
(27 cards)
what are paranasal sinuses?
- air-filled cavities within the bones of the skull that are connected to the nasal cavity and lined with respiratory epithelium
- Immune role- IgA, IgM
What are Anterior Paranasal sinuses?
- Frontal
- Maxillary
- Anterior Ethmoid sinuses
What are Posterior Paranasal sinuses
- sphenoid
- posterior Ethmoid
What is the sinus that is not present from birth?
Frontal sinus
What are the functions of paranasal sinuses?
- humidifying and filtering inspired air,
- reducing the weight of the skull, and
- resonating the voice
- Immune role
- Aid in growth of facial skeleton
Characteristics of frontal sinuse?
- start developing 2 or 3 years after birth.
- Lie between inner and outer tables of frontal bone.
- Right frontal air sinus is separated from the left by a septum
Where the frontal sinus drains?
into anterior part of hiatus semilunaris of middle meatus through frontonasal duct
the nerve supply of the frontal sinus?
Supraorbital nerve
what are the bounduries of Frontal sinus?
- Anterior: superciliary arch of the forehead
- Posterior: Meninges and frontal lobe of brain.
- Inferior: Roof of nose.
Roof of orbit (medial part).
Ethmoidal air cells.
What are the characteristics of the Maxillary sinus?
- Largest
- First to develop
- in body of the maxilla
What is the shape of maxillary sinus?
- Pyramidal:
Base
Apex
roof
Floor
Anterior
Posterior
The base of MS?
- Medial wall of the maxilla
- Lateral part of the nasal wall
- ostium of the sinus in The upper part
Apex of the MS?
- Lateral- into the zygomatic process of the maxilla
Roof of MS?
- floor of the orbit
- infara-orbital nerve
Floor of MS?
- the alvoelar process of the maxilla
The Posterior surface of the MS?
- Separates the sinus from infratemporal and pterygopalatine fossa
- the posterior superior alveolar nerves and vessels.
The anterior surface of the MS?
- Canalis Sinuosus: anterior superior alveolar nerve
The drainage of the maxillary sinus?
- n posterior part of hiatus semilunaris of middle meatus.
Arterial supply of the maxillary sinus?
- maxillary artery: Anterior, Middle, Posterior, and superior alveolar artery.
lymphatic drainage of the maxillary sinus
- Submandibular lymph nodes.
the innervation of the MS?
trigeminal- Maxillary: Anterior, Middle, Posterior, superior alveolar nerve.
Characteristics of ethmoid sinus?
- within labyrinth of ethmoid bone
- 3 groups: Anterior, Middle, and posterior
drainagr of Ethmoidal siuns?
- Anterior group: middle part of hiatus seminularis of middle meatus.
- Middle group: bulla ethmoidalis of middle meatus.
- Posterior group: posterior part of superior meatus.
Characteristics of the sphenoid sinus?
- 2 (right and left): bony septum
- within the body of sphenoid bone.
Separated from each other by a bony septum.
