national gird Flashcards
(2 cards)
what is the national gird
is what distributes electricity to where it’s needed
what is the order of things that pass electricity from power station to home/business and what do they do
power station-Power stations produce a relatively high current. If this went into the grid, huge amount of energy/ power would be lose as heat due to the resistance of the cables (as power lost P=IsquaredR).
step-up transformer- increases the voltage to around 132KV which decreases the current reducing the power lost due to heating in the cable. as p=VI if P in = P out (V and I are inversely proportional
national grid cables where the electricity goes from the power station to homes/businesses
step down transformer-A STEP-DOWN TRANSFORMER reduces the voltage down to a safer and usable 230 V for homes & businesses
home/business- electricity in your house
