what is nationalism?
devotion and loyalty to one’s country

what caused imperialism to increase?
industrialization. naitons wanted control over faraway places for the resources to produce goods. They could also provide them with more markets to improve the economy.
how was nationalism involved in increasing imperialism?
they believed that a large empire would increase their naiton’s power
why did Africa become a major target for imperialist powers?
because the territory provided minerals, palm oil and other crops. this meant forced labor for the Africans.
how did imperialism extend into asia?
- britain ruled over india and burma
- russia expanded into central asia
- france had the colony of inddchina
- britain and france forced china to open itself to trade
what did the US want to do with japan?
they wanted to open japan to american trade
what did japan do to become an imperial power?
they industrialized their economy and built a strong military
which countries did japan take over?
taiwan and korea
they also won a war against russia, gaining them more territory
what did the Monroe Doctrine state?
that the US wouldn’t help Europe in re-conquering latin american countries. it allowed the US to become the dominant power in the region.

because he wanted to wage war on France, so they joined him. Once they were successful, they decided to stay united.
