Iroquois Notes
The Iroquois are a Native Americanfederation that is made up of 5 tribes. These tribes settled in New York State.
These tribes were once independent but then they decided to join together to create a confederacy (united government).
The 5 tribes that made up the Iroquois Confederacy are:
- Seneca
- Cayuga
- Onondaga
- Oneida
- Mohawk
Why did the Iroquois form the Iroquois Confederacy?
They did this to make peace with the fighting Native American tribes
These groups once fought each other but then they realized that they were very similar and it was better to work together and be strong rather than be separated and weak.
The Longhouse
Where the Iroquois lived (dwellings= home)
Extended family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc) all lived together
They are similar to apartments in New York City because they provide housing for many families
The building of longhouses shows they adapted to their environment because they were made from the bark of trees, and usually built near a stream or river
Iroquois Society/ Women
The Iroquois family was matriarchal (matrilineal) this means family history was traced through the mother.
Jobs of Iroquois Women
Choosing the sachem
planting and harvesting the “three sisters”
gathering nuts and berries
Women’s power in society
Clan mothers = female elders who chose the Sachem (chief)
They could sit on the war council and vote for the sachems.
Iroquois Farming
Farming focused on growing the “three sisters,” the nickname for corn, beans & squash.
