A

Land Bridge Theory- The theory (idea) that Native Americans crossed into North America from Asia over a land bridge

migration- the movement of people

culture- a people’s shared values, beliefs, traditions, and behaviors

A

A primary source is information that was created at the same time as an event or by a person directly involved in the event.

A

The Iroquois are a Native Americanfederation that is made up of 5 tribes. These tribes settled in New York State.
These tribes were once independent but then they decided to join together to create a confederacy (united government).

Why did the Iroquois form the Iroquois Confederacy?

A

They did this to make peace with the fighting Native American tribes
These groups once fought each other but then they realized that they were very similar and it was better to work together and be strong rather than be separated and weak.

The Longhouse

A

Where the Iroquois lived (dwellings= home)
Extended family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc) all lived together
They are similar to apartments in New York City because they provide housing for many families
The building of longhouses shows they adapted to their environment because they were made from the bark of trees, and usually built near a stream or river

Iroquois Society/ Women

A

The Iroquois family was matriarchal (matrilineal) this means family history was traced through the mother.
Jobs of Iroquois Women
Choosing the sachem
planting and harvesting the “three sisters”
gathering nuts and berries
Women’s power in society
Clan mothers = female elders who chose the Sachem (chief)
They could sit on the war council and vote for the sachems.
