Natural and artificial selection Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the definition of natural selection?
The process when a population’s characteristics change over generations with heritable traits increasing an organism’s chances of reproduction and survival.
What happens in natural selection?
through reproduction (cell division), organisms pass on their alleles(DNA) to their offspring.
What MUST exist in a population for selection to occur?
species diversity
natural selection vs artificial selection
Natural selection is the impact of the environment on organisms survival, artificial selection is the impact of humans on the organism’s traits that are most desirable
Advantages of artificial selection
it is easier to manage fields when we select only one important crop that needs to be grown for our survival
Disadvantages of artificial selection
With new diseases this could result in it’s spreading and killing of the rest of the population
