Natural Hazards pt 2 Flashcards
(27 cards)
What are the ways in which a hurricane can cause damage?
Wind damage, wave damage ,storm surge ,flooding ,landsldies
State an example a hurricane
Hurricane Ivan in 2004 killed 94 and caused US $17billion in damage
wind damage
Wind damage to crops, trees, utility poles and building
wave damage
to coastal structures, ships and boats, beaches, coral reef and fisheries
Storm surge
may cause widespread coastal flooding
Floodings
heavy rain can bring flash floods in narrow valleys and widespread flooding on flat land.Floods damage property and crops and may spread disease
List Three Ways Hurricanes can cause destruction to a Caribbean country. Give an Example.
Three ways are :
Strong winds can bring heavy winds
Landslides
From Hurricane Mitch in 1998 killed 9100
How do meteorologist track storms?
storms are tracked using satelitte images and atmospheric data
What does a hurricane warning indicate?
a high risk
What do computer models predict?
the probable future track ,indicating area sat risk
eg.For Hurricane Ivan countries were given a watch or warning .When it hit most Grenadians were shocked by the force of the storm.
Warnings and watches are usually every six hours. How much time is each othe following given:
Hurricane warning
Hurricane watch
Tropical storm warning
Tropical storm watch
Hurricane warnings-hurricane winds are expected within 24hrs
Hurricane watch-Hurricane winds are possible within 36 hrs
Tropical storm warnings-tropical storm
winds expected within 24hrs
Tropical storm watch-Tropical storm winds are possible within 36 hours
What is a hurricane and when is it born?
A hurricane is a huge,rapid rotating storm.
when winds reach 76mph a hurricane is offically born
Hurricanes can be up to 600miles across and have strong winds up to 200mph
How long do hurricanes last and where do they form?
Hurricanes usually last for over a week, moving 10-20 miles per hour over occean
Hurricane form close to the equator
Hurricanes rotate around the centre of the storm or ‘eye’; this is usually the calmest part
State and define Saffri -Simpson Scale terms
Tropical depression-uo to 62km/h.(Floods)
Tropical storm-up to 118km/h .(Floods )(Crops damaged)
Category 1- 119-153km/h(Damages to crops and weak buildings)
Category 2- 154-177km/h(Roof damages, some trees down)
Category 3- 178-209km/h(serious building and other damage)
Category 4- 210-249km/h (extensive damage. storm surge up to 4metres
Category 5- 250km/h severe and extensive damage
Give 2 examples of Hurricanes
Hurricane Ivan in Grenada
Hurricane Jeanne in Haiti
Give 3 damages of Hurricane Ivan in Grenada at a category 1 stage
houses and hotels damaged or destroyed
stadium destroyed.schools and hospitals damaged.
looting.prisioners escaping
Give 3 damages of Hurricane Jeanne in Haiti at tropicak storm stage
325mm of rain in nothern mountains of Haiti
Violent flooding around the city of Gonaives
Lower winds than Hurricane Ivan but over 3,000 deaths
What are some ways in which a volcano can cause damage ?
lava flows
pyroclastic flow
ashfalls
mudflows and lahars
Define lava flows
Lava flows - basic lava flows freely, destroying everything in its path.Acid lava causes an explosive eruption
State an example where pyroclastic flow occured
pyroclastic flows destroyed St.Pierre,Martinique in 1902
Define ashflow
ashfalls-lava fragments are thrown high into the air and soldify ,falling to the ground as ‘ash’.A thick ash fall can bury buildings
Define mudflows nd lahars
wet volcanic ash creates a devastating mudflow.
eg.The Nevado de Ruiz mudflow killed 21,800 in 1985
How many volcanoes in the Caribbean have erupted since 1900
five volcanoes have erupted since 1900
