Define nurture
External influences that lead to behaviour being learned after we have been born/conceived, regardless of any biological characteristics.
Define nature
Internal influences that lead to behaviour being pre-determined before the environment has had a chance to have an effect.
What is learned behaviour?
Behaviour that has been directly taught or acquired through experience and was not present at birth.
Genetics regarding behaviour
The views that behaviour can be explained in terms of heredity and that development occurs in line with the structure of DNA.
What are innate characteristics?
Behavioural traits that are present at birth and believed to be a part of a person’a nature.
Define environmental influences
Features of the external world that may affect our behaviour as we grow and develop, including other people, social situation and experiences.
