What drug is used for the prophylaxis for nausea and vomiting
Antihistamines (cyclizine and promethazine) or phenothiazines (prochlorperazine)
What anti-emetic is given in pregnancy
Generally drug therapy should be avoided but use promethazine if needed
First line chlorperazine, cyclizine, prochlorperazzine, promethazine
Second line : doperidone ondansetron metoclopramide
What anti-emetic is used in post-operations
5HT3-receptor antagonist (ondansetron) or dexamthasone
Cyclzine dexamethasone prochlorperazine prochlorperazine ondansetron, droperiodol
What antiemetic is used for pre operations anticipatory
Lorazepam as short acting
What ant-emetic is used for motion sickness
Hyoscine HYDRObromide
MRHA update- risk of severe anticholinergic side effects with hypscine bromide patches
What anti-emetic is used for in terminal illness
Antipsychotic (haloperidol and levomepromazine, domperidone, metoclopramide. Levomepromazine, cyclizine, dexamethasone or hyoscine butyl bromide
What anti emetic is used for in patients who have Parkinson’s
Domperidone
What is domperidone
An anti-emetic that doesn’t cross the BBB therefore suitable for Parkinson’s disease
10mg three times a day
Minimum age is 12
Maximum use is 7 days
Patient should be 35+kg
Causes QT prolongation
Fun fact: mettoclopramide is same dose 10mg 3x a day
What is metoclopramide
Does cross the BBB
Causes extra pyramidal side effects- do not use in Parkinson’s
10mg 3x a day
Minimum age is 18
Maximum use 5 days
