what did the nazis do in the election of 1933 so they could increase the number of seats in the reichstag
- tried to stop other political parties from carrying out effective campaigns
- controlled news media + meetings with opposition were banned
- used SA to terrorise opponents
- fire broke out in reichstag and nazis blamed it on communists to whip up anti communist feelings

- may 1933 - abolished trade unions as he saw them as a threat due to the power they had over the working class.
- JUly 1933 - banned all parties apart from nazi party some germany was officially a one party state

the SA was also unpopular with the leaders of teh german army and ordinary germans

- Rohm was his biggest threat but other members disagreed with his views
- hitler sent men to arrest and kill rohm and several hundred other men
- he claimed those who were murdered were plotting against the government so therefore their murders were legal
- got rid of all potential opposition

- there were laws to sack civil servants taht didnt support the governement
- in 1933 they set up special courts where basic ights were suspended
- judges didnt have to be fair and were expected to make rulings isnide nazi party views

- they were meant to protect saftey and order but they used harsh interrogations and imprisonment without trial

employed to make sure germans were loyal to nazis and members of public were encouraged to report disloyalty
