Neck and Upper Extremities Exam Flashcards
(38 cards)
anterior triangle borders?
superior - mandible
medial - midline neck
lateral - sternocleidomastoid
posterior triangle border?
inferior - clavicle
posterior - trapezius
anterior - sternocleidomastoid
preauricular lymph node
anterior to ear
occipital lymph node
posterior to sternocleidomastoid
deep cervical lymph node
posterior to sternocleidomastoid
submandibular lymph node
under mandible lateral
submental lymph node
under mandible medial
supraclavicular node
posterior to clavicle
thyromegaly
goiter
thyroglossal duct cyst
thyroid tissue migrates thyroglossal duct into the neck
ROM of neck?
flex - 45
extend - 85
rotate - 90
side bend - 40
cervical foraminal compression test
aka spurlings maneuver
side bend to affected side with compression yields radicular symptoms
maximum cervical compression test
add extension and rotation to samde side as head is side bent
distraction test
to alleviate radiculopathy symptoms in neck
thoracic outlet syndrome
compression of vesicles and nerves under clavicle
pain in neck and shoulders
-numbness in last 3 fingers and forearm
roo’s test
arms abduct to 90 and external rotate
patient opens and closes hands for 3 minutes
weakness - positive for thoracic outlet syndrome
adsons test
palpate radial pulse with elbow and shoulder in extension
-move to abduction and external rotation
have patient turn head
if pulse diminishes - thoracic outlet syndrome
winged scapula
injury to long thoracic nerve
-weak serratus anterior
adley scratch test
upper arm - external rotation / abduction
lower arm - internal rotation / adduction
strength testing
0 - no active movement
1 - contraction with no movement
2 - full active ROM with no gravity
3 - full active ROM with gravity
4 - fill active ROM against partial resistance
5 - full active ROM overcome full resistance
supraspinatus
patient abducts against resistance
subscapularis
patient rotates internal against resistance
infraspinatus, teres minor
patient externally rotates against resistance
thoracohumeral group strength test
adducts forearm against resistance
