Neck Muscles Week 1 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Platysma origin?
Fascia covering superior parts of the pectoralis major and deltoid muscles.
Platysma insertion?
Inferior border of the mandible, skin, and subcutaneous tissues of the lower face.
Platysma innervation?
Cervical branch of the facial nerve(CNVII)
Platysma action?
Draws corners of mouth inferiorly and widens it as in expressions of sadness and fright, draws skin of the neck superiority when teeth are clenched, indicating tension.
SCM origin?
Sternal head: anterior surface of the manubrium of the sternum
Clavicular head: superior surface of medial third of the clavicle
SCM insertion?
Lateral surface of mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral half of superior nuchal line
SMC innervation?
Spinal accessory nerve(CN XI), C2 and C3 nerves
SCM actions?
Unilateral contraction: lateral flexion of head and rotates it so face is turned superiorly toward opposite side
Bilateral contraction: extends neck at Atlanto-occipital joints, flexes cervical vertebrae so that chin approaches manubrium, extends superior cervical vertebrae while flexing inferior vertebrae so chin is thrust forward with head kept level
With cervical vertebrae fixed, may elevate manubrium and medial end of the clavicles, assisting pump handle action of deep respiration
Anterior scalene origin?
Anterior tubercles of transverse processes C3-C6
Anterior scalene insertion?
1st rib
Anterior scalene innervation?
Cervical spinal nerves C4-C6
Anterior scalene?
Flexes neck laterally; elevates 1st rib during forced inspiration
Middle scalene origin?
Posterior tubercles of transverse process of C4-C7
Middle scalene insertion?
Superior surface of 1st rib; posterior to groove for subclavian artery
Middle scalene innervation?
Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
Middle scalene actions?
Flexes neck laterally; elevates 1st rib during forced inspiration
Posterior scalene origin?
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C4-C6
Posterior scalene insertion?
External border of 2nd rib
Posterior scalene innervation?
Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C7-C8
Posterior scalene actions?
Flexes neck laterally; elevates 2nd rib during forced inspiration.
