Neoplasia Flashcards
(12 cards)
Neoplasia
New uncontrolled growth
Independent of physiologicalcal growth signal
Benign tumors
Malignant tumors
Dont spread or invade distally well circumcized with a capsule; do not metastasize
No well defined dimarcation locally invasive irregular borders no capsule capacity to invade and metasitize
Blood vessels
Brain
Benign: Hemangioma
Malignant: Angiosarcoma
Meningioma
Invasive meningioma
Mesothiolioma
All tumors are?
Parenchyma
Monoclonal; One type of cell proliferating and dividing eg kappa or lamda genes
G6PD isozyme studies and HUMARA (most common)
Neoplasm that forms the parenchyma
Hemartoma
Choristoma
Anaplasia
Normal tissue at normal location but the proportion is wrong egs
Ectopic tissue: adrenal below the kidney
Malignant Atypical
Pleomorphism - variation
Hyperchromasia - more dense color excess dna
Nuclear/cytoplasm ratio larger
Irregular
Morphology
Solid
Cyst: has cavitary
Papilloma - fingerlike
Polyp - club shapped in a hollow organ
Sessile without distinct stalk easier to become malignant
Pedunculated stalked polyp
Benign
Malignant
Malignant are atypical more mitosis
Benign: “oma”
Benign has less mitosis
Adenoma
Tumors originating from glands
Papilloma
Hemartoma
Choristoma
Benign
** cells normally found at that given site **
** that is not normal to that site **
Arrows in leiomyosarcoma are showing mitosis
Dysplasia
Dysplasia = “disordered growth” is a feature of dysplasia along with atypia
*** Dysplasia implies atypia is present (hamartoma = no atypia)
Things are starting to go wrong, but not complete!!
Salivary glands
More than one neoplastic layer
2 morphological patterns
