Neoplasia nonsense Flashcards
(23 cards)
primary neoplasms of kidney
- relatively uncommon in dogs
- rare in all other species
benign primary renal neoplasms (4)
- renal cell adenoma
- ondocytoma
- fibroma
- hemangioma
malignant primary renal neoplasms (4)
- renal carcinoma
- nephroblastoma
- transitional cell carcinoma
- hemangiosarcoma
renal carcinoma
- most common primary renal tumor
- dogs, cats, horses
- often metastatic when clinical signs evident
- usually unilateral, may be bilateral or multiple masses within one kidney
nephroblastoma
- primary renal tumor
- pigs, chickens, dogs, cats
- unilateral at one pole and within cortex –> lobulated appearance
transitional cell carcinoma (renal)
- uncommon primary renal tumor
- arise in renal pelvis from transitional epithelium
hemangiosarcoma
- rare primary renal tumor
- much more common as metastatic renal tumor (secondary)
secondary renal neoplasms (4)
- lymphoma (lymphosarcoma)
- hemangiosarcoma
- malignant melanoma
- carcinomas
lymphoma (lymphosarcoma)
- secondary renal neoplasm
- most common neoplasm in cat kidneys
- neoplastic lymphocytes
- can lead to chronic renal failure
hemangiosarcoma
- secondary renal neoplasm
- neoplastic endothelial cells forming irregular blood-filled vascular channels
malignant melanoma
- secondary renal neoplasm
- neoplastic melanocytes
- cortex and medulla affected
renal carcinomas
- secondary renal neoplasm
- renal metastases from mammary, thyroid, etc carcinomas
renal pseudotumors (3)
- granulomas (systemic fungal infections, FIP)
- simple (developmental) cysts
- polycystic kidney disease
polycystic kidney disease
- young cats: autosomal recessive trait
- adults: autosomal dominant trait (persian cats)
- leads to renal failure
benign lower urinary tract neoplasms (2)
- papilloma (polypoid masses in mucosa to bladder)
- leiomyoma (muscular wall of bladder)
malignant urinary tract neoplasms (3)
- transitional cell carcinoma
- squamous cell carcinoma
- leiomyosarcoma
- rhabdomyosarcoma
transitional cell carcinoma (urinary)
- most common primary renal tumor in urinary bladder (very metastatic)
- seen in areas with enzootic hematuria due to bracken fern consumption
- trigone region of bladder, urethra
- may block urine outflow
- neoplastic urothelial cells
bovine enzootic hematuria
- chronic ingestion of bracken fern produces neoplastic syndrome
- hematuria and urinary bladder tumors (TCC)
- thiaminase, bleeding factor
- ptaquiloside
squamous cell carcinoma
- most common primary urinary bladder tumor in horses (uncommon in other species)
- thickened plaque-like areas in bladder mucosa
- invade bladder wall but don’t metastasize (usually)
leiomyosarcoma
- primary urinary neoplasm (metastases uncommon)
- uncommon in all species
- neoplastic smooth muscle cells
rhabdomyosarcoma
- rare primary tumor of urinary bladder and urethra in young, large breed dogs
- botryoid (grape-like) masses
- local invasion, metastatis to lymph nodes
secondary neoplasms of urinary tract
- lymphoma
- others are rare
urinary tract pseudotumors
polypod cystitis (associated with chronic urocystitis, urolithiasis)
