Nerve supply LL & Nerve injuries Flashcards
(28 cards)

Explain the grades of nerve injury
(Seddon classification )

Myotomes of lower limbs?

Explain the repair process of nerves
ok
Causes of neuropathy?
Injury
-stretch of nerve, complete division
• Extrinsic pressures: tumour, abscess, etc.
• Medical conditions
– Diabetes
– Alcohol excess
– Drugs
• Other rarer causes: nerve tumours, etc.
Dermatomes of the lower limbs

what is wallarian degeneration?
a process that results when a nerve fiber is cut or crushed and the part of the axon distal to the injury (i.e. farther from the neuron’s cell body) degenerates

Which cells help guide the sprouting axons to the muscle?
schwann cells
What causes foot drop?
which nerve?
where is sensation lost?
Deep peroneal nerve
• Loss of anterior muscle compartments-
– Tibialis anterior
– Extensor hallucis longus (EHL)
– Extensor digitorum longus (EDL)
– Peroneus tertius
• Weakness in ankle dorsiflexion: FOOT DROP
• Sensory loss in the 1st web space

If u damage ur deep peroneal nerve, where is sensation lost? What about motor?
foot drop

Describe the course of the femoral nerve and explain its motor and sensory functions

Piriformis syndrome
which nerve is effected?

compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle

Meralgia paraesthetica
which nerve is effected?
Compression of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh as it passes through the inguinal ligament or as it pierces the fascia lata.
***wearing tool belt, skinny tight jeans (7aram), preganancy, obesity,

Obturator nerve

course of lateral cutanous nerve of thigh

describe the route of the common fibular nerve (Peroneal)
and what muscles it supplies
it divides it superficial and deep fibular nerves

course of tibial nerve
- Larger terminal branch of sciatic nerve
- Crosses popliteal fossa
- Passes deep to soleus
- In posterior compartment between flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus
- Passes deep to flexor retinaculum (tarsel tunnel)
- Gives off medial calcaneal nerve
- Divides into medial and lateral plantar nerves

Femoral nerve injury
Loss of saphenous nerve, medial cutaneous nerve of thigh

if u have injury of the femoral nerve, what motor effects would be distrupted?

Tibial nerve injury in the popliteal fossa
Injuries to common peroneal (fibular) nerve or its deep or superficial branches
