Nerves Flashcards
(30 cards)
What do sensory neurons do
Carry impulses towards the CNS
What do motor neurons do
Carry impulses away from CNS
Describe the peripheral nervous system
The nerves coming off the brain and spinal cord
What’s the central nervous system
Comprising the brain and spinal cord
Describe autonomic nervous system
Controls the body’s involuntary activities
How is a nerve impulse transmitted from one nerve to another
dendrites
Describe reflex arc
A reflex action that’s a response to stimuli that doesn’t involve the brain for initiation
What do dendrites do
Receive impulses from other nerves and carry them towards the cell body
Describe the cerebellum
The Cerebellum Is responsible for the coordination of movement
along with the inner ear it is also involved with balance and posture
Function of cerebrum
It is involved with higher order behaviours and it receives sensory information that is processed and results in conscious actions.
Function of glial cell
Function as a supporting framework for nerve cells and also believed to be involved in nutrition and repair of the neural tissue
Function of a nerve cell
Transmits impulses
Function of an axon
Carrie impulses away from the cell body towards other neurons or tissues
Function of Myelin sheath
Acts as an insulator for the axon and it speeds up the nerve impulses
Describe the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
The sympathetic prepares the body for emergencies, Exhilarate the heartbeat dilates the pupils and stimulate adrenal gland
The parasympathetic system slows the heart rate constricts the pupils and contracts the bladder
What are the three layers of the meninges
Dura mater is the outer layer
The arachnoid is the middle layer
The pia mater is the inner layer
What are the names of the supporting nerve cells
Glial cells
What part of the brain is responsible for the coordination and find control of limb movement
Cerebellum
What’s is the structure of the neuron that carries the impulse away from the cell body
Axon
Explain what happens at the synapses
Synapses is an area of communication for nerve cells, the nerve impulse reaches a synaptic knob and releases neurotransmitters which stimulates the transmission of the nerve impulse across the synapse.
What does the meninges do
Protects the CNS
The tissue that protects the CNS is called?
The meninges
Where would you find the CFS cerebrospinal fluid
Circulates around the CNS, surrounds the tissue of the brain and spinal cord
What is the name of the process where a signal travels along a sensory neuron to the spinal cord and then travels out along a motor neuron to a muscle without any involvement of the brain
The reflex arc
