Nervous and endocrine system Flashcards
(29 cards)
Where is the Axon?
The middle beads
What is a Axon?
The part of a neuron that carries signals away from the cell body.
Where is the Axon terminal?
At the end, the small bits of ‘hair’ that connects with the axon
What is an Axon terminal?
The part of a neuron that passes a signal to the next cell
What do axon terminals contain?
They contain chemicals that can be released into the synapse for the next neuron to detect
Where is the Brain located?
Top of your body, in your head
What is the Brain?
Its an organ in the head that controls behaviour.
What does the brain do?
The brain processes the information received by the senses and controls body functions, actions and emotions.
Where is the Cell Body?
Its where the nucleus is. The main ‘star’.
What is a cell body?
The part of neuron that contains the nucleus.
What is the role of the cell body?
It controls all of the functions of the neuron
What is the CNS?
The central nervous system receives information and sends information to the peripheral nervous system.
What are the components of the CNS?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the dendrite?
part of a neuron that receives signals from other neurons.
What does the dendrite do?
Dendrites branch out to receive signals from multiple neurons and send signals to the cell body for processing
3 main parts of the brain?
Cerebrum , cerebellum and the brain stem
What does the cerebrum?
fills up most of your skull and it helps with remembering, problem solving and thinking
What does the cerebellum do?
sits at the back of your head, under the cerebrum. It controls coordination and balance.
What does the brain stem do?
sits beneath your cerebrum in front of your cerebellum. Breathing, blood pressure and sleeping.
What are the 3 neurons?
Motor neuron, Inter neuron and sensory neuron.
What does the motor neuron do?
sends messages to the effector gland/muscles
What does the sensory neuron do?
sends signals to the Nervous system
What does the inter neuron do?
connect spinal motor and sensory neurons
What is peripheral nervous system?
All of the nerves in your body expect the brain and spinal cord
