Nervous Sys Disorders Flashcards
(21 cards)
progressive senile dementia due to widespread deterioration of brain tissue w/ a variety of signs
alzheimer’s disease
central nervous sys degeneration of motor neurons only
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
flaccid palsy of one half of the face d/t inflammation or damage to the facial nerve (VII)
Bell’s Palsy
irritation of the median n in the wrist where it passes under the transverse carpal lig
carpal tunnel syndrome
a group of disorders diagnosed in early childhood characterized by impaired motor func and possible cognitive and sensory dysfunc
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
deprivation of O2 to brain tissue associated with blood clots that dislodge from one location called emboli
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) a.k.a. strokes
chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures
Epilepsy
throbbing headaches brought on by diff triggers
migraines
type of headache thats steadily painful and responds well to M
tension headaches
protrusion of the intervertebral disc which puts pressure on the n root or other structures
ex) sciatica
herniated discs
reoccurance of the virus that causes chicken pox
Herpes Zoster (shingles)
inflammation of the coverings of the brain and spinal cord caused by bacteria or viruses
meningitis
autoimmune attack of the myelin covering of motor and sensory axons w/in CNS
multiple sclerosis
progressive degeneration of dopamine liberating cells that act of the basal ganglia
Parkinson’s Disease
usually bilateral damage to peripheral nerves leading to stocking and glove loss of sensation or burning and loss of mvt
peripheral neuropathy
viral infection of motor neurons in the spinal cord leading to weak mms and paralysis
polio
many people who had polio recover as unaffected motor neurons grew new axon collaterals to the mms that lost their motor neurons
post-polio syndrome
temporary loss of blood supply to fingers, toes, nose, ears or lips leading to colour changes in the skin and possible numbness or tingling
Raynaud’s Syndrome
disorders including insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, shift work
sleep disorders
injuries to the vertebral column and/or spinal cord which lead to complete or incomplete loss of motor, sensory and/or autonomic func. at the level of lesion and below
spinal cord injuries
entrapment syndrome involving pressure on the brachial plexus and possibly the subclavian artery
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
