Nervous System Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the 5 senses?
Sight
Hearing
Taste
Touch
Smell
What does the eye consist of?
Sclera
Cornea
Iris
Pupil
Lens
Retina
What are the different parts of the ear?
Outer ear
Middle ear
Inner ear
What do these parts consist of?
Outer ear:
Ear lobe (pinna)
Auditory canal
Middle ear:
Eardrum
Ossicles
Inner ear:
Semi-circular canals
Cochlea
Auditory nerve
How do we hear?
1)sound waves move to the inside of the ear
2)the sound waves cause movements in the middle ear.
3)the movement causes waves in the cochlea.the hair cells are stimulated and send impulses to the brain
4)the brain interprets it and identifies what is heard
What is the function of the tongue?
Has taste buds on the surface
Plays an important role in speech, swallowing food and chewing
(It is a movable muscular organ)
What are the four basic tastes?

Skin is the biggest organ of the body.
It protects internal organs against the environment
Controls body temperature
Senses touch
How does the sense of touch work?
1)the cell receptors in the skin are stimulated
2)the receptors surrounding the nerve ends are stimulated
3)stimulus is converted to an impulse and is sent to the brain
4)the brain interprets the impulse and identifies what is felt
What is the function of a nose?
Breathing
Important for sense of taste(it captures soluble chemical stimuli)
For smell
How do we smell?
1)odour molecules dissolve I’m the moisture of the mucous glands
2)a stimulus occurs in the receptors
3)stimulus converted to an impulse and is sent to the brain
4)the brain interprets the impulse and identifies what you smell
