Nervous System Flashcards
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Lies in the midline of the body
Receives and process info.
Peripheral nervous system
Lies outside the cns
Contains cranial nerves and spinal nerves
Neuron
Specialized nerve cell that transmit and process information from one body part to another.
Action potential
Electrochemical signal or impulses
Soma of neuron
Central body, contains nucleus
Dendrites
Projections attached to the cell body. Receives a nerve impulse or signal from another neuron and send the impulses to the cell body.
Axon
Single, long extension from cell body. Transmits the signal across the neuron.
Axon terminal
Submits and transfers the signal to another neuron or muscle. “Synapse” (gap) with another neuron
Myelin sheath
Covers axon. It increases the speed of an impulse or signal on an axon
Synapse
A region where neurons nearly touch. Axon terminal of one neuron releases an impulse or signal to the dendrites of another neuron.
Sensory neuron
Responds to a stimulus
Recieves the stimulus and transmits the signal to the cns.
Inter neuron
Recieves signals from sensory neuron.
Stores and processes info
Decides how to respond to stimulus
Motor neuron
Receives instructions from the interneuron on and send a signal to respond
What protects the spinal cord?
Vertebral column
Cerebrospinal fluid
Water cushion that protects the cns. Circulates around the brain and spinal cord
Where are spinal nerves found?
How many pairs?
Between each none of the vertebral column.
31 pairs
Route of communication
Sensory neuron enters into dorsal root.
Synapses with interneuron. Interneuron receives stores and processes this information.
Synapses with the motor neuron
Motor neuron leaves through the central root
Medulla oblongota
Located at the bottom of the brain stem. Controls breathing, heartbeat/rate, blood pressure
Pons
Located at the bulging center part of the brain stem. Responsible for sleep and wakefulness
Cerebellum
Located behind the brain stem. Controls muscular and motor coordination
Brain stem consists of
Medulla oblongota, pons, midbrain
Midbrain
Relay station for tracts passing between forbrain and spinal cord or cerebellum
Forebrain consists of
Thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebral cortex and corpus callosum
Thalamus
Responsible for Sensation
