Nervous System Flashcards
(34 cards)
Frontal Lobe
Front of brain, over the eyes
Processes smell and movement, and controls cognitive function.
Damage affects personality, socialization, and assessing risks
Parietal Lobe
Top of the brain
Responsible for speech and reading
Main function is processing somatosensation and proprioception
Occipital Lobe
Back of the brain
Responsible for vision, recognizing and identifying the visual world
Temporal Lobe
Base of the brain, near the ears
Responsible for interpreting sound
Contains the hippocampus
Cerebral Cortex
The outermost part of the brain
Thick piece of nervous system tissue that folds
Corpus Collasom
Thick fiber bundle that connects the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex
Hippocampus
also known as the sea horse
Processes memory
Transmagnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Temporarily deactivates specific parts of the cortex using strong magnets placed on the outside of the head
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
looks at changes in oxygenated blood flow in particular brain regions that correlate with specific behavioral tasks
What are the 4 lobes of the cortex
Parietal, Frontal, Occipital, Temporal
Hypothalamus
Links the nervous system and the endocrine system
Controls the pituitary
Amygdala
Part of the limbic system
One on either side of brain.
Left side has both negative and positive emotions
Right side has negative emotions
Processes memory, decision-making and emotional responses
Pons
Conducts signals from the brain to the cerebellum, medulla and tracts and then carries signals to the thalamus
Responsible for sleep respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, sensations, and posture
Hippocampus
Located on either side of the brain
Consolidates information from short term to long term
Enables Navigation
Thalamus
Also known as the relay station
Relays sensory signals and motor signals to the cerebral cortex
Regulates sleep and wakefulness, and arousal
Damage can cause permanent coma
What happens when the hippocampus is damaged
Can cause damage to memory
Dorsal
situated on or toward the upper side of the body, equivalent to the back
Ventral
the front, or lower side
Anterior
the front or direction toward the front of the body
Posterior
the back or direction toward the back of the body.
Superior
toward the head end of the body; upper
Inferior
or caudal - away from the head; lower
Lateral
toward the midline of the body
Medial
away from the midline of the body
