Q

Topology

Point-to-Point (P2P)

A

Topology in which all fiber links are from one transmitter to one receiver, with uninterrupted optical fiber paths from communication switching equipment to a single location at the premises

Q

Network

WDM-PON

A

Passive optical network architecture using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to assign different wavelengths for separate ONU units. Two variations: point-to-point (P2P) and time and wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM). P2P uses dedicated wavelengths for each ONU unit, while TWDM allows for dynamic allocation of wavelengths for higher capacity and flexibility

Q

Network

Feeder Network

A

Fiber cable network from central office Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to first optical splitter in a PON architecture. Carries high-bandwidth signals to optical splitters, which distribute signals to individual ONUs in the distribution network

16
Q

Equipment & Materials

Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

A

Set of fibers, splitters, couplers, and other passive optical components in a PON that provide transmission means between OLT and ONUs, and between ONUs themselves

17
Q

Equipment & Materials

Drop Cable

A

Fiber cable that connects individual subscriber’s premises to nearest optical splitter in PON network

18
Q

Equipment & Materials

Access Protocol

A

Set of rules governing communication between equipment at communication nodes and subscriber’s premises in PON network. Access protocols ensure reliable and effective transmission and reception of information over optical paths

19
Q

Equipment & Materials

Ethernet

A

Data communications protocol for premises and local access networks

20
Q

Network Usage

A

The data rates and downstream/upstream speeds of various PON technologies, such as NG-PON2, 10GE-PON, GPON, XG-PON1, and B-PON

21
Q

Network Usage

Dark Fiber

A

A strand of fiber made available to a provider on an exclusive basis without active termination points

22
Q

Premises

A

Homes or places of business, with each apartment in a multi-dwelling unit counted as one premises

23
Q

Homes Passed

Homes Passed

A

The potential number of Premises which a Service Provider has capability to connect to an FTTH/FTTB network in a service area

24
Q

Homes Passed

A

The number of premises that are connected to an FTTH network and are already subscribers or can be turned into subscribers without further installation work

25
Q

Fiber Deployment Area (FDA)

A

A geographic area where fiber-optic infrastructure is being deployed or planned, encompassing all entities that can potentially connect to the network, representing the potential market for the operator’s services

Note: Also described as a polygon

26
Q

Installations

ISP Installation (Inside Plant)

A

Refers to the internal wiring, cabling, and installation of ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and Wi-Fi beacons in the client’s property up to the NID (Network Interface Device) outside.

27
Q

Installations

OSP Installation (Outside Plant)

A

Refers to the infrastructure, civil work, and fiber installation between the POP and the client’s NID

28
Q

Installations

Optical Installation

Refers to the installation of fiber from FDH to NID on the premises

29
Q

Homes Deliverable

Handed Over

A

The drop is 100% complete from the curb to NID, including the fiber
