wireless acess point
what does a peer to peer network do?
there is no server, all the computers are connected
what does a client server network do?
it uses a server to send info to other computers and outside appliances.
what is the difference between the internet and www?
the internet is a series of globally connected networks and computers, whereas the www is a collection of data and information accessed via the internet.
how do you think information on a server in America reaches your laptop in the UK?
underwater fibre optic cables
list all the topologys
bus, star, ring, mesh
which topology is the most secure?
mesh
list packet headings
link layer, internet layer, transport layer, application layer
what does the link layer do?
Electrical signalling Flow control Error detection Network addressing — MAC addresses Transmitting datagrams between internet layers
what does the internet layer
IP header
IP data
Sending and receiving IP addresses
Host-to-host routing and addressing
what does the transfer layer do
Protocol header and data Host-to-host communication UDP — connectionless TCP — connection- oriented
what does the application layer do?
Data we want to transmit
Application protocol — DNS, HTTP, etc.
Prepares application protocols to move to transport layer
what is a network?
a set of devices connected for sharing data.
what are the most important network criteria’s?
performance, reliability, security.
what is the most secure network type?
mesh
what is the least secure network type?
bus
what are the pros and cons of a star network?
highly efficient, safe, no point to point connections.
expensive, immobile, cables can get damaged easially.
pro and cons of a ring network?
low chance of packet collisions, don’t need a server, high speed.
if you lose one device it all goes down, expensive, bandwidth gets shared
pros and cons of circuit switching.
fixed bandwidth, no waiting time at switches
pros and cons of packet switching
more efficient than circuit switching, reduces lost data packet, takes long times to establish a connection.
