Network Types Flashcards
What are the 3 classifications of network?
LAN, WAN and (PANs)
What is a LAN
Local Area Network
What is a WAN
Wide Area Network
What is a PAN
Personal Area Network
What do LANs do?
A LAN is a network that is geographically confined to one building or site
Who would use a LAN?
Schools, small businesses, collages, universities and homes
What do WANs do
Is a network spread over a large geographical area. It can cover more than one site and can even be spread across a whole country, or even the world
Who would use a WAN
Banks, Large Businesses
Is the Internet a WAN or LAN
WAN
What is a PAN
A network spread over a tiny geographical area
What is setting up a PAN known as?
A Bluetooth connection
What are WANS, LANS and PANS
Either Wired or Wireless networks
What is a wired network?
They are often identified by the use of a physical piece of wiring to connect devices
What are wired networks used for often
Normally in businesses or in a place where devices like PC’s will not move
What is a wireless network?
They use radio waves to carry signals. These signals are limited in range, which is normally 50m, but are due to interference
What could interfere with a wireless connection
Walls
What devices are WAP’s really meant for
Phones, as long as it is near the wireless access point (WAP)
Which Costs more - Wired or Wireless
Wired are more expensive to set up
Which one is harder to install, Wired or Wireless?
Wired
What are the maximum transmission speeds?
Wired = 1 gigabit per second, Wireless = 50 megabits per second
What is the maximum distance?
Wireless - No more than 50m
Wired - Up to 100m (2km with fibre optic)
Which is more secure?
Wired connections
LAN Hardware?
A NIC (Network Interface Card), A transmission medium and something to connect to
What is a NIC?
Network Interface Cards are what offers an interface port for a wired connection. A wireless NIC provides a radio waves
for connecting wirelessly.
