What does LAN stand for?
Local Area Network
What does WAN stand for?
Wide Area Network
What does (W)PAN stand for?
(Wireless) Personal Area Network
What is a PAN/WPAN?
Anything connected to your personal network
What is a Hub?
A device that sends data to all the devices connected to it.
What is a Switch?
A device that sends data to the machine specified in the data packet.
What is a router?
A device that sends data packets to other networks based on the IP address
What is a modem?
A device that changes analog data to digital data and digital data to analog data
What is a firewall?
Software or hardware that blocks or allows data based on specified rules
What is the purpose of a DHCP network service?
Hands out IP addresses as devices are connected to a network
What is the purpose of a DNS network service?
Takes the words from a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) and converts it to an IP address so a machine can read it. Used for websites.
What is a NAT?
Network Address Translation. A technique that hides a private network using usually one public IP address
What is a Default Gateway?
A router that is at the “edge” of a network
