Networks Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is a network?
Multiple devices connected for the purpose of communicating and sharing resources.
What is the order of the TCP/IP model?
Application, Transport, Internet/Network, Link/Data
Why is HTTPS used more than HTTP?
HTTPS is a more secure version as it encrypts data so clients and servers use it to protect their data.
What does HTTP stand for?
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
What is a protocol?
Accepted rules so that devices can be compatible and reliably communicate.
What is data broken down into before travelling?
Data is broken down into packets.
What is the purpose of TCP?
TCP breaks down data into packets before they are sent and reassembles them once they have been received.
What is error checking and correction?
Packets travel separately so these are used to ensure no errors have been created during transmission.
In which layer is TCP located?
The Transport Layer.
In which layer is HTTP located?
The Application Layer.
What are two disadvantages of wireless connection?
- It is less stable and unreliable
2. It is slower than wired connections
What are topologies?
The way a network is laid out.
What is SMTP used to do?
SMTP is used to send and transfer emails between servers.
What does FTP sand for?
FTP stands for file transfer protocol.
Where are most of the important protocols located?
In the Application Layer.
Where is internet protocol located?
The Internet/Network Layer.
What is UDP?
An alternative to TCP in which errors may be less detrimental than a delay.
What are some of the advantages of the star topology?
If a device fails the rest of the network is not affected, it is easy to add more devices to the network and it is fast.
What are the disadvantages of the bus topology?
The more devices added the slower the network, there will be some data collisions and if he main cable breaks the network won’t work.
What does a star topology have that a bus topology doesn’t?
A switch.
Where is WIFI and Ethernet used (In which layer)?
The Link/Data Layer.
