Semicircular Canals
Detect angular rotation movement
Horizontal - Located 20-30 degrees up when head is upright
Posterior- 45 degrees from midline, midway between sagittal and coronal plane
Anterior- 45 degrees from midline, midway between sagittal and coronal plane
Otolithic Organs
Utricle: Senses horizontal acceleration
Saccule: Senses vertical movements
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Periferal vestibular disorder order; most common cause of vertigo in adults
10-64 cases per 100,000 persons; women outnumber men by a ratio of 1.6:1
Nystagmus
Rapid, uncontrollable eye movements, with a slow phase and fast phase
Meniere’s Disease
Abnormal endolymph fluid pressures
- Hearing loss tinnitus; vertigo
- Slow chronic onset

Vestibular Neuritis
Viral Infection is common and usually affect the vestibular nerve unilaterally- dizziness/vertigo, nausea vomiting present
Labyrinthitis
Perfipheral vestibular disorder; causes both inflammation to both branches of CN8
Perilymphatic Fistula
Perilymph to leak from the inner ear into the middle ear
Acoustic Neuroma
Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss
Tinnitus
Dizziness & Imbalance
Feeling of fullness in the affected ear
Primary Symptoms
Persistent Motion Sensation: Typica;;y described as rocking, swaying, bobbing or floating
