Neurobiology Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the two sections of the nervous system?
Central nervous system
Peripheral nervous system
What does the central nervous system consist of?
Brain
Spinal cord
What can the peripheral nervous system be split into ?
Autonomic and somatic
What is the peripheral nervous system
Sensory and motor neurons and all of the nerves connecting them to each other and to the CNS
What does the autonomic system control
involuntary actions (cardiac muscles, glands)
What does the somatic system control
Voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
How does the somatic system work
Sensory neurons carry impulses into the CNS from the senses.
Motor neurons carry impulses out of the CNS to muscles and glands
What is the autonomic system split into
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What is the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
Sympathetic- prepares the body for fight or flight
Parasympathetic- prepares the body for rest and digest
