What does ambulatory mean?
Able to walk
What is the Babinski reflex?
Movement of the great toe upward and the fanning out of the other toes when the bottom of the foot is struck
What is a concussion?
Loss of consciousness due to severe head injury
What is dysphasia?
Inability to understand verbal commands as a result of brain injury/illness
What does gait refer to?
A manner of walking
What is hemiparesis?
Paralysis or weakness on one side of the body
What is neuralgia?
Nerve pain
What does neurovascularly intact mean?
Circulation and sensation are normal
What is paresthesia?
Abnormal tactile sensation such as numbness, tingling or burning
What is photophobia?
Sensitivity to light
What does post-ictal refer to?
Symptoms that occur after a seizure
What is the Romberg sign?
Swaying of the body or falling when eyes are closed
What is saddle anesthesia?
Loss of sensation restricted to the buttocks, perineum, and inner thighs
What is a seizure?
Convulsions due to abnormal electrical impulses in the brain
What does syncope mean?
Temporary loss of consciousness (fainting)
Bell’s palsy
Sudden weakness in the muscles of one side of the face. Not caused by a
stroke
Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)
Stroke, loss of blood to part of the brain
Meningitis
An inflammation of the meninges, the membranes surrounding the brain and
spinal cord.
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Brief, stroke-like attack that resolves spontaneously
