What is progression of GBS, and what are the residual symptoms?

A

Generally begin to recover within 6 weeks, and completely recover by 12mo

RF for poor prognosis: age >40, preceding diarrhea (aetiology?), severity of symptoms

Residual symptoms
- fatigue
- pain, parasthesia
- weakness (20% will be unable to walk independently)

Treatment related fluctuations
- worsening of symptoms after initial recovery
- treatment: repeat the treatment that worked initially

What is the process that usually kills people with GBS?

A
  • cardiac arrest (autonomic disturbance)
  • respiratory failure
  • respiratory infection
  • PE

What are the triggers for GBS?

A

Infectious
- Campylobacter jejuni
- CMV/EBV, myocplasma pnuemonia, H influenza, hepatitis E

Vaccines (risk of GBS still higher with flu than the vaccine)

Surgical trauma

ISx

PRegnancy
