neurone & synaptic transmission Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
3 types of neurons
A
sensory, relay and motor
2
Q
what is a motor neuron
A
connects the CNS to effectors such as muscles.
short dendrites, long axons
3
Q
what is a sensory neuron
A
carry messages from PNS to CNS
long dendrites, short axons
4
Q
what is a relay neuron
A
connects S to M or other relay neurons
short dendrites, short axons
5
Q
the structure of a neuron (1&2)
A
- cell body includes a nucleus which contains genetic material
- branch like structures called dendrites protrude from the cell body, carrying nerve impulses from neighbouring cells towards the cell body
6
Q
structure of a neuron (3,4&5)
A
- axon carries electrical impulse away from cell body and down the neuron. it’s covered in a myelin sheath
- gaps in myelin sheath called nodes of raniver speed up transmission
- at the end are terminal buttons that communicate with next neuron across the gap
7
Q
electrical transmission
A
