Neurons Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is it called when neurons send electric signals?
They are called nerve impulses - they only travel one direction
What are the neurons’ function?
The nervous system made of trillions of nerve cells (neurons)
They carry electrical messages very quickly
What’s the function of the sensory neuron?
They carry electrical messages from cells in sensory organs to the brain or spinal cord
What’s the function of the motor neuron?
They carry electrical messages from central nervous system to an effector (muscle/gland)
What is the connector neuron?
What link sensory and motor neurons together
What are voluntary actions?
Slightly slower
Electrical signal goes via the brain
What are involuntary actions?
Very quick signals
Electrical signal goes straight to spinal cord (bypasses brain)
What are the names of the end part of the neurons?
Dendrites
What is the body called on the neuron?
Cell body
What is the thin line called connecting one part of the neuron to another?
Axon
What is the end part of the neuron called?
Terminal
