What does botox do and what is it used for?

A

Prevent Ach release at alpha motor neuron

Spasticity
Migraine
Dystonia
abnormal eye movement

starts working 48-72 hrs.

What is baclophen and what is it used for?

A

bind to GABA
block Ca from coming to presynaptic terminal -> reduce NT release and hyperpolarization

used for spasticity
SCI

Patho of alzheimers?

A

excess tau/ inadequate clearance.
excess amyloid production

there is brain shrinkage/ loss of cholinergic neuron in frontal cortex
amyloid plaque
neurofibrillary tangles. all from tau.

A

block Ach-ase to make more Ach. present.

via:
AchEI
Glutamade modulator: antagonize NMDA
Behavior treatment: environemtn/mood (SSRI) .agitation.(neuroleptic)

L-Dopa/ Carbidopa?

A

replace Dopamine

inhibit conversion of Ldopa to Dopamine outside of Brain.

Pure dopamine won’t cross BBB but L-dopa will

Why is Carbidopa added to L dopa?

A

Carbidopa inhibities enzymes that break down L-dopa.

that can be used to treat bipolar
neuropathic pain

AED is antiepilleptic used for seizure.

Drop in spasticity scale

hypotonia w/o resp. difficulty.
