what is the cerebral cortex?
outermost layer of the brain. It is responsible for higher-level cognitive functions such as language, thought and memory.
Divided into four lobes:
Frontal lobe: complex thought, planning, control movement.
Parietal lobe: touch and spacial awareness
Temporal lobe: Hearing, object memory
Occipital lobe: vision.
Insular lobe: taste and awareness of internal organs.
What is the subcortical brain?
under the cerebral cortex. responsible for emotion, motivation, and memory.
Includes the limbic system:
Hippocampus: memory and navigation
Amygdala: processes emotions, particularly fear
Basel Ganglia: planning and exciting movement
Thalamus: relay centre for sensory information.
Hypothalamus: regulates hunger, thirst, temperate, etc
