What is it?
Housing estate for single parent women with a low income, built in the 60s.
What happened?
An American property firm called Westbrook Partners bought the place and tripled rents to evict families, gentrify the place and attract new more affluent buyers.
What happened to surrounding businesses?
They were forced to shut down because there were no more people to spend money in the area anymore, causing new businesses to open so they can fit the needs of the more affluent. e.g. the pub turned into cafe/ a bistro.
Who came to rescue the women and force the company to leave?
As the women fought back, Russell Brand protested along with them and they even got 500K signature petition to the Downing Street.
What happened next?
It became a global sensation as a celebrity was now involved so Westbrook Partners were forced to leave and sold it to Dolphin Living group and left back again to the single parent families.
