What matters can an inmate file a grievance on?

A

Alleged violations of: civil rights, laws, department policy, jail procedures, staff misconduct, medical services, unsafe conditions, unsanitary conditions.

A

Once an inmate files a grievance what is the next step?

A

The grievance is reviewed by the area supervisor to determine if it is a grievable issue, AND that it has been filed within 7 days of the event.

A

The note that the issue is not grievable in the response box, and route the grievance to the grievance coordinator for approval or additional actions.

A

They will be investigated, and a response shall be provided by the designated health professional in those areas.

A

To review, for approval or additional actions, All grievances received into the electronic grievance database.

What does the grievance coordinator do if: it has been filed outside of the seven days, It is repetitive, excessive, or frivolous, or has been previously addressed, or is not a grievable matter?

A

They return a response to the inmate with a notation of the reason why no action is being taken.

What does the grievance coordinator do if they receive a legitimate grievance?

A

They route the grievance to the appropriate area ( i.e. jail, clinic, program services, kitchen) for investigation.

How long do Sgts have to investigate a grievance?

A

Sergeants have 15 working days to respond to a grievance… Unless additional time is necessary to properly investigate the matter in which case the time can be extended to a total of 30 days. The inmate must be advised of the extension.

Once a grievance has been investigated what does the sergeant do next?

A

Notification will be made to the inmate indicating the resolution, remedy, or disposition via the electronic system. The response shall be submitted to the Lt for review and electronic approval before returning it to the inmate.

In the event of a system outage how are grievances handled?

A

In the event that a 24 hour period of system outage is experienced grievances will be handled via the old paper forms

How do you inmates appeal the outcome of a grievance?

A

Inmates have five working days after receipt of a response on a grievable issue to appeal to the Jail Captain.

How can paper copies of grievance records be obtained?

A

Through a “freedom of information act” request.
