Allegory
Any writing with a double meaning
Ambiguity
Anything that can be interpreted in a different way to how it may have been meant
Archaism
A word or expression that’s out of date yet still used by the author for artistic purposes
Blank verse
Prose written in unrhymed iambic pentameter
Iambic pentameter
A line of verse composed of ten syllables arranged in 5 metrical feet, each consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable
Conceit
An unusual comparison
Didactic
Having the manner of a teacher or instructor eg giving instructions
Free indirect discourse
A special type of third-person narration that slips in and out of characters’ consciousness
Mock-heroic
A type of work that mocks common stereotypes of heroes
Octave
A verse form, consisting of 8 lines in iambic pentameter
Paradox
The use of contradiction in a manner that oddly makes sense
Parody
Something that imitates the serious nature of a literary work in order to make fun of those same features
Pathos
A scene/passage designed to encourage pity or sympathy in a viewer/reader
Quatrain
A verse stanza of 4 lines, often rhyming abab
Syntax
A set of rules in a language, dictating how words from different parts of speech are put together to convey a thought
