Scripture Memorization
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Triumphal Entry (Sunday)
Common for disciples to borrow animal for teacher; common for pilgrims singing pilgrim songs to accompany someone entering the city. Psalm 118:26-29 was used during Feast of Tabernacles. IRONIC: call Jesus “Son of David” and then ask “Who is this man?”
Fig Tree Withered
Associated with Pharisees & Sadducees & Jerusalem. “You don’t bear fruit, then you’re done.” Just like Fig Tree Withers, Saducees and Pharisees will be no more.
Cleanses Temple (Monday)
Temple was epicenter of Judaism. The Court of the Gentiles was 300x 450 meters packed with 1 mil. people with one entrance and one exit staircase.
- Jesus seen as inciting a riot.
- People were selling animals, changing money, and taking a profit - Den of Robbers.
- Parable on visit to temple: 1. Parable of Sons. 2. Parable of Tenants - Pharisees want to arrest Jesus, but afraid of crowd. 3. Wedding Banquet - Those invited don’t deserve to come. Pharisees make a plan to trap Jesus in words. 4. Parable of Talents.5. 10 virgins. 6. Sheep & Goats. Response to #4,5,6 - “Chief priests and elders assembled in palace to High Priest and plotted to arrest Jesus and kill him.. but not during the Feast.
Passover & Upper Room Discourse
– Synoptics have Eucharist; John has feet washing. In Synoptics, last Supper was Passover meal. In John, Last supper Day of Preparation; Jesus dying same time as Passover lambs.
o Luke: 2 cups at dinner & cup of suffering in Garden. Passover had 4 cups.
o John: “Hour” means His death and glorification. Has washing feet – all about serving each other. Ch. 14-17 are the final discourse, moving toward the crucifixion.
o “Do this in remembrance of me.” In Luke, refers to the Eucharist. In John, refers to foot washing. Not in Matthew or Mark.
Garden of Gethsemane
– John leaves out that they were sleeping. “The Cup” refers to the spiritual agony of bearing the sin of the world, or enduring the divine judgment which sin deserved.
Judas Betrays Jesus
– Parallels to Jesus: 1. God’s plan at work. 2. Judas has free will – responsible for his own actions.
Arrest & trials
– Luke’s differences: 1. 1 meeting, Mark has 2. 2. Omits charge against Temple. 3. Sanhedrin doesn’t condemn Jesus in Luke. 4. Peter’s denials precede trials. 5. Soldiers mocking precedes trial. 6. Who gets Peter to deny Christ?
o Herod – Only in Luke, not in Matthew and Mark. Why? 1. Good politics. 2. Could be some other group besides the Jews. 3. Mocking could have been done by Pilate’s men and Herod’s. 4. Mark omits a lot about Herod.
o Jesus’ charge: Blasphemy. Penalty for blasphemy was stoning, not crucifixion.
o Jesus died on Nisan 14 in AD 30.
Crucifixion
Emphasized “Tree” because anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse (Deut. 21:22-23). John focuses on “Lamb” image, connecting with OT Sacrificial system.
o Who killed Jesus? Pilate’s Ambition, The Jewish leader’s jealousy, Judas’ greed? Ultimately, Jesus willingly handed himself over. He Chose!
Resurrection
Each Gospel writer tells us something that proves Resurrection. Matthew: Mary Magdalene & Great Commission. Mark: Mary Magdalene & Women. Luke: Ordinary People. John: Miraculous Catch, Appearance to Thomas, SPIRITUAL.
o The disciples return to Galilee to meet Jesus.
4 types of miracles
Mastery of nature, Healing the body, Healing the mind/exorcisms, raising the dead
Mastery of Nature
o Why Mastery of Nature? 1. People can’t argue it away – forces people to make a choice. 2. Jesus flips nature upside-down. 3. Speaks to his role as creator.
o Miracles of Nature mentioned: Water into wine, feeding 5000/4000, Walking on water, Calming the sea, Cursing the fig tree, Finding the coin in fish, Great catch of fish.
Healing Body
: In OT & NT, thought illness was because of sin. Jesus’ healings bump up against religious leaders.
o Solicited – Woman with blood, cleansing Leper, Cleansing 10 lepers, Two blind men, Blind Bartimaeus.
o Unsolicited – people don’t ask; Jesus does it so others have to make a choice to follow or not. Crippled Woman, Man with withered Hand, Man at pool of Bethsaida, Man blind from birth, Malchus’ ear.
o Received by faith of others – All non-Jews. Official’s Son, Syrophoenician Woman’s daughter, Centurion’s Servant.
Healing the mind
– Consider who Jesus is talking to in each instance. Ex: Controversial Exorcism (Divided Kingdon), Demoniac in Synagogue, Lunatic boy, Mary Magdalene, Legion
